Family conflict can occur for tons of reasons, such as different values, opinions, and misunderstandings. At first, I thought my family would be perfectly normal until the time came that we disagreed too often. It has been repetitive, and I was really affected and became stressed.
I felt that I had to deal with the conflict within this family since I’m not being motivated at home. The conflicts I had to deal with are financial problems and plans of my parents going for a divorce. I don’t want to linger on these problems and I want to find a solution. To have a peace of mind, I vented out my feeling to my best friend then I consulted to our schools guidance counsellor.
She told me that I should know what causes the conflicts to know how it will be resolved. As we chatted further, she knows everything I’m going through and she discussed to help me deal with these conflicts. She explained that divorce is one of the most difficult conditions a family can stumble upon. This is why I’m a bit stressed and she said that because if this I would need to figure out how to establish my identity, my new responsibilities and task, and deal with the loss of an important relationship. My family would need to be restructured and member will have to find new ways to handle finances, chores, family, roles and relationships. If my parents would continue having a divorce, I would have to reduce stress as much as possible to make the transmission smoother.
She told me to have quiet time alone, listen to music, relax my muscles, and joint activities to limit rushing. I should prioritize activities, and give myself the chance to say no to requests. If I become upset, I should control my temper by talking to my friends or consult her. She also added, when there is an argument and it makes me feel that I’m losing control of myself, it is better for me to walk away.
As for the financial problems I had to deal within my family, it can provoke tension and it’s also a serious problem to deal with. My guidance counsellor told me that this problem is difficult to avoid. To help solve this problem, she told me that our family should work as a team and explain each other’s views to resolve the conflict. We should sit together and brainstorm as many solutions as possible and be open for settlement.
Knowing all of these and having peace of mind, I know I’m ready to deal if not settle the conflict within my family. It’s a good thing that there are friends and a professional I can talk to in times like this!
